North Carolina High Country - Ashe County

Come Visit the North Carolina High Country

Escape the heat of the low county and spend time this summer in the cool breezes of Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, also known as North Carolina’s High Country. This area is well known for adventures and activities. Here are only a few of the reasons to come to Ashe County for your summer vacation.

The most visited park in the United States, the Blue Ridge Parkway – America’s favorite scenic drive makes its way through Ashe County. The Parkway is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. In addition to breath-taking views of never ending mountain tops, there are many places to camp, picnic, biking and hiking on dozens of trails.

As you drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains, there will be many small villages and towns that you will want to visit. One of those villages is Glendale Springs. Located in Ashe County, North Carolina, Glendale Springs is home to the Parkway Trading Post, the famous fresco paintings by world renowned Ben Long, Florence Thomas Art School, Glendale Springs Inn, and the Glendale Springs Bakery, a silversmith shop and more.

After leaving Glendale Springs, take a short drive into the small mountain town of West Jefferson, NC. West Jefferson is fast becoming the art destination of the high country. Here you will find unique shops, restaurants, street murals, art galleries, and friendly shop keepers who welcome you to the town. On selected summer evenings, a well attended gallery crawl may be under way, a concert in West Jefferson’s pocket park, or  an evening of performing art at Ashe County's Civic Center.

Take a drive to the top of Mount Jefferson State Park. The park overlooks the town of West Jefferson – it is awesome to see from below – but drive to the highest peak and see the surrounding mountains – a beauty to behold! There are hiking trails, beautiful wild flowers, native plants, wildlife and over 600 acres of protected natural woodlands. Also at the summit, a picnic shelter is provided for public use.

Plan to spend a day on the designated Historical Wild and Scenic New River. The winding river flows through Ashe County passing small country farms, natural protected areas filled with wild flowers and wildlife. It is an adventure that you will enjoy and remember for days to come.

After spending a few days in the area, you may want to look at some of our great properties for sale.

We hope you will visit our area and make plans to come again for leaf season - or stay a lifetime.

Have a nice day,
